FOOTLOOSE… The Corsage

In the movie Footloose the parents give the girl her corsage for the dance. But in my real life back in 1963, when I took a girl to our first Dance at Drummoyne Boy’s High School when I was two months short of 15 years of age; I bought an orchid corsage and pinned it on my girlfriend’s dress for the dance. She was one of the few girls at the dance that had a corsage and she loved her orchid. She went to Riverside Girls High School at Gladesville. I knew her from our primary school years at Abbotsford Sydney. We both were in Kindergarten together in 1954. Her name Margaret Marshall, she was a young lady and I was a young gentleman, and we both behaved well because our ‘Baby Boomer’ generation were taught from a young age the conduct rules of good behaviour and standards of decency.

In the years after we started work our roads of destiny took different paths. We never conflicted or broke up, we just moved on in different directions and lost contact. I wonder sometimes, I trust she had a happy life. She stands as one of my best teenage years memories. And the school dance was not ‘Footloose’ but it was in its day a great fun loving night. We like every generation, love dancing.

History should know that the ‘Baby Boomers’ were raised to believe in the significant values of dressing well and being a Lady and a Gentlemen in Manners and Courtesy at all times.
